Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1972 based on Stanisław Lem's novel of the same name published in 1961, this Soviet SF film depicts a meditative psychological drama occurring mostly aboard a space station orbiting the fictional planet Solaris. The original science fiction focuses on the ultimate inadequacy of communication between humans and other species. Tarkovsky's adaptation, however, explores the grief and consciences of the cosmonaut scientists studying Solaris' mysterious ocean. The director seems to show a new emotional and intellectual depth to the old science fiction.
