Although I'd read several of her earliest novels, it's been a while since I've read anything by Sandra Dallas. Although slow to start, this novel about a midwife in an 1880 Colorado mining town picked up momentum and sped to an unexpected climax. When Gracy Brookens is accused of murdering a newborn baby, her life is suddenly thrown into chaos. As she struggles to deal with the town's reaction and the biggest trial in years, Gracy questions whether it's time to retire if she isn't hanged. As secrets are revealed, Gracy comes to terms with her past choices and helps others to make new choices. The author is very deft at drawing historical details about the lives and very few choices that women had in that place and time.
