My 4 year old grand-daughter is calling this her favorite book. Celebrations by families from many places and cultures with various family configurations, each honoring the birth of a child. The illustrations are beautiful and the repetitive phrasing very comforting for a little one. The people's names were intriguing for her as well. The ending becomes unexpectedly religious, which called for some improvisational paraphrasing. Recommended for a quiet time book, to build self-esteem and respect for diversity.

A celebration of the differences of various cultures, but more importantly, the things that make every culture the same, that is family. Every baby has their toes counted, is sung a lullaby, and the family gathers, bringing gifts/food from their culture.
