"When I was growing up, canning was for old folks and cranks and separatists," writes Liana Krissoff in her introduction to Canning for a New Generation . But not anymore. With soaring food prices and the increasing popularity of all things domestic and DIY, there's never been a better time to revisit the centuries-old techniques of preserving food at home.

This hip, modern handbook is filled with fresh and new ways to preserve nature's bounty throughout the year. Organized by season and illustrated with beautiful photographs, it offers detailed instructions and recipes for making more than 150 canned, pickled, dried, and frozen foods, as well as 50 inventive recipes for dishes using these foods. Basic information on canning techniques and lively sidebars round out this refreshing take on a classic cooking tradition.

The best canning book in my opinion. Are you freaked out by the amount of sugar in traditional canning recipes? Do you want to use honey, stevia, or another alternative sweetener? This is the book for you. I also love the detailed instructions on how to successfully use Pomona's Universal Pectin.

I ended up buying the book. Great recipes including home made apple pectin and tomato juice from your leftovers from canning tomatoes. Good recipes not found elsewhere too.

After looking at how much sugar is contained in the recipes in the classic Ball canning book, I freaked out. This is a terrific alternative reference. It features great low-sugar, no pectin (or sometimes a little Pomona Pectin) recipes. I made a batch of strawberry rhubarb jam and another of strawberry and then knew I needed to buy the book.

I love this book. I've made several recipes from different "seasons" all were great. I ended up buying it and use it often.

Really great recipes. I'm looking forward to trying them out this summer. I think I'll need to buy this book!
