I accidently read the darkness rising trilogy before this one. Its really good but I do like the darkness rising better. I tottaly recommend this if you have read any other of Kelly Armstrong's books. Even if you haven't you really should read The Summoning.

I loved this trilogy, though I think the Darkness Rising trilogy a bit better. If you liked this book, I would definitely recommend the Dark Visions series by L.J Smith, although I don't think it is available through the OPL.

I just loved reading this book and the other two books in this series. I just couldn't put these books down. I'm also reading the darkness rising series that takes place after the darkest powers series. I totally ship Derek and Chloe <3

I am 40 years old and although geared as a teen novel I love this novel and can not wait to read 2 The Awakening & 3 The Reckoning of the Darkest Powers series. Just like a movie out of the 80s a bunch of misfits get stuck in an institution and all slowly discover they have secret powers. And Chloe can see dead people. Could not put this entertaining book down. Felt like I was watching a movie.

This entire series is AMAZING! I'll admit, I was a bit confused in the beginning, but just stick with it. The series just gets better.

Following the worst five beginning chapters I ever read, a thrilling mystery unraveled. I'm glad I pressed on through the beginning. The ending was a little more like the end of an episode than the end of a novel, but I really got attached to the characters and am excited to see what's going to happen.

Derek: "Sure. Go ahead. Take it easy. I'm sure Dad will walk in that door any minute and rescue us. And if he's in trouble? If he needs help? Well, too bad, 'cause that would require effort and you're too busy...chilling."

If I was crazy, I'd be doing more than seeing and hearing people who weren't there. I'd be acting crazy, and I wasn't.
Was I?

Chloe Saunders sees dead people. Yes, like in the films. The problem is, in real life saying you see ghosts gets you a one-way ticket to the psych ward. And at 15, all Chloe wants to do is fit in at school and maybe get a boy to notice her. But when a particularly violent ghost haunts her, she gets noticed for all the wrong reasons. Her seemingly crazed behaviour earns her a trip to Lyle House, a centre for disturbed teens.

At first Chloe is determined to keep her head down. But then her room mate disappears after confessing she has a poltergeist, and some of the other patients also seem to be manifesting paranormal behaviour. Could that be a coincidence? Or is Lyle House not quite what it seems…? Chloe realizes that if she doesn’t uncover the truth, she could be destined for a lifetime in a psychiatric hospital. Or could her fate be even worse…? Can she trust her fellow students, and does she dare reveal her dark secret?

Chloe Saunders is your average teenage girl. She lives in Buffalo, with her aunt and attends an art school. She spends time with her friends, talks to boys, that kind of thing. Then she meets a ghost. This ghost is terrifying and grotesque. The interaction sends her into a breakdown, which gets her sent to a group home, Lyle House.

Lyle House is for mentally-ill teens who must work through their problems, or at least that is what it is advertised to be. Bizarre situations are occurring at this house, not only with herself, but also with other residents of the house. And no matter how much she tries not to believe it, Chloe sees more ghosts. Through strange events, the secrets everyone is hiding spills out, connections are made, and soon nothing is as it was thought to be. But with secrets.... there are always people who want to keep them quiet.
