Released in 1985 - This intense adult-drama tells the sordid story of nightclub hostess, Ruth Ellis who was the last woman to be executed in the United Kingdom, after being convicted of the murder of her lover, David Blakely.

Coming from a humble background, Ellis was quickly drawn into the world of the London nightclub scene, which led to a chaotic life of brief relationships, some of them with upper-class nightclubbers and celebrities. Two of these were Blakely, a racing driver already engaged to another woman, and Desmond Cussen, a retail company director.

In 1965 - Ruth Ellis was hanged at HM Prison Holloway. She was 29 at the time.

A crime of passion in 1950s London ultimately brings to an end to capital punishment in UK. First-rate performances by the entire cast, and a provocative script by the late Shelagh Delaney -- this is one of the best English films of the 1980s. So who is giving this film 2.5 stars? Hanging advocates?

An absorbing story of passion and revenge. Miranda Richardson, in her extraordinary movie debut, is brilliant--a fascinating and lethal combination of Marilyn Monroe and Bette Davis.
