One of George Eliot's best-loved works, The Mill on the Floss is a brilliant portrait of the bonds of provincial life as seen through the eyes of the free-spirited Maggie Tulliver, who is torn between a code of moral responsibility and her hunger for self-fulfillment. Rebellious by nature, she causes friction both among the townspeople of St. Ogg's and in her own family, particularly with her brother, Tom. Maggie's passionate nature makes her a beloved heroine, but it is also her undoing.

The Mill on the Floss is a luminous exploration of human relationships and of a heroine who critics say closely resembles Eliot herself.

An excellent story, so well-written as only Mary Ann Evans can write, a page-turner and so many wonderful lessons regarding character, our early influences, life and love. Eliot is my favourite author of all time.

Good book, if a bit slow at times. I love the main character, Maggie, for her strength of character.

I love George Elliot's flowing, descriptive writing style. And its hard not to feel attached to her vivid, well-developed and memorable characters. The metaphors and the symbolism in this book will have you pondering life for hours after you put this book down. Truly one of my favorite books.. but then again I haven't read any of Elliot's other works.
