This can't help feeling like the workshop version of "Goodnight Pun Pun". Maybe it's because it's much shorter, so the plot didn't have enough pages to flesh itself out. At least on the surface level, much of the book felt gratuitous and excessive, favoring the graphic more than taking the time to develop the character moments. It's like on the border between high art and edgy trash, both vaguely poetic and full of shit at the same time. I think the essence of puberty helped mask this book's credibility because that period can be so hazy so much of the static nature of the plot can be attributed to the awkwardness of growing up. Coming of age stories can be so frustrating to critique, which I feel helped give "A Girl on the Shore" a leg up from its otherwise vastly perverted concept.

This manga lovingly describes a raw and overwhelming romance between two deeply troubled teenagers desperately seeking to fill the dark voids in their lives. Asano Inio's artwork is simply gorgeous! Virtually every panel is filled with beautiful inkings over highly detailed backgrounds. The characters and their emotions are realistic and the extremely graphic sex scenes pack an extra emotional punch.

The graphics in this book are amazing. My first true manga read and it did not disappoint!

As with all of Asano's works, there is a lot of raw emotion in this book. If you're looking for a true-to-life story, you'll enjoy this.
