This novel provides an examination of contemporary America through the prism of a family tragedy: when a powerful parent dies, each of his adult children reacts in startling and unexpected ways, and his grieving widow in the most surprising way of all. Stark and penetrating, it's an exploration of psychological trauma, class warfare, grief, and eventual healing.

An 800 page book about a grieving family may seem a little intimidating. However, it is so well written, some parts read like poetry, it goes a lot fast than you think. This is the story of a family grieving over the loss of the patriarch. Told from multiple perspectives during the year(s) following the death. It's honest, raw and beautifully told. Love her style of writing.
