"In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family too. Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance, but to take charge of his first major case in the Two Rivers region; a complex place not quite as idyllic as tourists suppose. A body has been found on the beach near to Matthew's new home: a man with the tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. Finding the killer is Venn's only focus, and his team's investigation will take him straight back into the community he left behind, and the deadly secrets that lurk there."--Provided by publisher.

Ann Cleeves (from PBS's Shetland and Vera programs) has started a new series, Two Rivers. When her detective in this new series, Matthew Venn, talks, I hear the voice of her Shetland Detective, Jimmy Perez, but Matthew doesn't exude a similar confidence and self-assurance. When Matthew's assistant detective, Jen Rafferty speaks, I hear Vera's voice and see similar characteristics, but also some differences. Cleeves' new characters all feel guilty about something in their lives and much space is devoted to those thoughts and feelings which I didn't find appealing. I also found there was too little action with too many pages devoted to dead end leads in an investigation to the death of a man on the shore. The ho-hum plot and weak detective characters aren't the ingredients that make me want to wait for the next installment in this series.

Our first introduction to this new series with Matthew Venn. I quite liked him and this novel. A good read.

A New & Noteworthy pick. Rave reviews for this new series by an author whose books are behind two hit TV shows. A British detective goes back for his father's funeral in the evangelical community he left long ago, but he is drawn back into it all when a dead body is found on the beach.

Good mystery. The solution was not obvious, even though some of the mysteries involved could be correctly guessed as the story progressed. The main character is interesting and there is much more about him to unearth, so the series should be engaging.

Down to North Devon for the start of a juicy new Cleeves series.

The first book in a new series for Cleeves introduces Matthew Venn as the DCI investigating a murder in North Devon. For fans of her series set in Shetland I think there are many similarities between Venn and Jimmy Perez. Both are cerebral in their approach to investigation, often pausing to "get a feel" of a place. This particular murder (and two abductions) kept me guessing for quite a while. Not super good but I will definitely check out another in the series as I have liked the author's other books so much.
