For more than two hundred years, the Owens women had been blamed for everything that went wrong in their Massachusetts town. And Gillian and Sally endured that fate as well: As children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape. One would do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they shared, even into adulthood, brought them back--almost as if by magic...

A very enjoyable read. Delightful and entertaining.

The Washington Post coined the phrase Yankee Magical Realism to describe Hoffman's work. In the Owen family, three generations of women weave their spells of magic and love, making lilacs bloom out of season and hearts race with passion. An amazing read from an author who improves with each book.

Alice Hoffman's magical realism and prose delight me. I will eat her words (in the best, most delicious way possible).

I think of this as one of my "safety blanket books" that I have reread countless times. Sometimes I'll just pick it up and read a portion because it makes me feel comfortable and happy - hence, safety blanket book.

It's sacrilege when people prefer the movie over the book, especially when the book isn't pandering to its audience. Hoffman has a certain touch to all her books and has just the right amount of detail to give you an idea of what's going on. In comparison to the movie, this book isn't strictly plot driven. It mostly describes the lives of the characters and the transformations they go through. In comparison to the movie....it's more honest and authentic. The movie touches at your romantic core while the book is just touching. Nuff said.

Good, relatively light reading. I loved how magic was casually interspersed into the story.

An enjoyable way to spend some free time. The magical aspect in all of Hoffman's books (at least the ones I've read thus far) is always fun. Relationships and love are are at the forefront here, so it's definitely chick-lit.

Not the greatest book. Watch the movie instead.
