What better way to spend a cold winter day (and night) than curl up with a book set in Paradise no less? What's better is that the book "Winter in Paradise" is written by Elin Hildebrand. The novel starts with Irene Steele hearing about the death of her husband in a plane crash on New Year's day. If this is a shock, what comes as a bigger shock is that Russ Steele seems to have had a secret life. Irene can't believe that her husband who seemed to dote on her was hiding a huge secret. The novel segues to Irene's sons Baker and Cash and their reaction to their father's death. We head to the tropics - the US Virgin Islands, and the locale seems to weave its own magic on the family. New characters are introduced and now every member of the family has his or her own secret. This leads Irene to beseech her family, "please do not keep secrets." Cash sums up the situation best when he ruminates, "Funny we've been here less than a week and we know everyone else's personal drama." Ultimately it's their own personal drama that trumps them all. Also, just as we were aching for closure, we find the novel ends in a cliffhanger - can't wait for the sequel!

Just finished this book. Horrible abrupt ending with no resolution. Guess what, you have to read two more sequels to finish the story. This is a really cheap way to assure book sales but very frustrating for the reader. I love Elin Hilderbrand but this is a real disappointment.

Very entertaining but not as emotionally involving as I like and the characters did stuff that didn't make sense to me. However the plot and setting are really fun.

First installment of the Paradise Trilogy, so yes there is a cliffhanger. Good character development and a mystery to be solved on the Caribbean island of St. John.

I loved this book. I couldn’t stop reading. This is book one of a trilogy. I can’t wait for book two.

Wow! I love, love, loved this book! I've been addicted to Elin Hilderbrand's Nantucket Island series and was looking forward to her trio of St. John, USVI novels. Winter in Paradise has wonderful characters and is a delightful blend of family drama, unconditional love, mystery and romance.

The plot sparkled for me like the beaches and waters of the Caribbean.

I can't wait to wait to read how Russell Steele made so much money.

Disappointing read. I've enjoyed this author in the past but this was below what I have come to expect from her. I did finish it, it is a quick read but just isn't very good.

Ends with numerous cliffhangers and a totally unsatisfactory ending. I don't recommend it if you're looking for a satisfying read. I'm not a fan of books with numerous cliff-hangers. It seems designed so that author can sell you multiple books for one story.

I was about a third of the way through and I realized that there were more and more subplots being developed, a lot of extraneous material that seemed to be padding and nothing seemed to be heading toward getting resolved.

So, with a sinking feeling, I skipped to the end. Yep, not only did nothing get resolved but even more new plot developments were thrown in. At the end! Turns out, after I did a little research online, that you have to read two more books (which aren't yet available) to find out how everything turns out.

So, with disgust, I returned it and will never read another book by this author again.

I think it's disrespectful to readers who spend time reading a book, are enjoying it and invested in it, but are then denied a satisfying ending.
