VERY GOOD 2007 film version of Hairspray - interesting cast including John Travolta as main character Tracy's large size mother. It is a bit whack - but entertaining and I enjoyed it as I have the other renditions of Hairspray I have seen - including last year's fun live theatre version at Issaquah Village Theatre.

Not my favourite movie.

Believability-wise, it lacks a lot. But in terms of fun, hilarious dance numbers? It goes above and beyond in that area. I mean, it's generally silly and kinda crazy too, but we can give a few nods to the spectacular dance numbers and amazing actors (especially Zac Efron!!!). I thought the romance was sweet (especially between Seaweed and Penny), and even if the storyline was a tad frivolous we'd better just accept 'Hairspray' for what it is—a fun musical with plenty of jokes and a touch of romcom too.

Set in 1960’s Baltimore, eccentric Tracy Turnblad finds her way as a dancer on the Corny Collins Show and becomes the first “different” looking person to ever appear on such mainstream television. While on the show, she brings racial injustices into the light and gives a voice to those who are typically unheard. The romantic drama uses song and dance in a very powerful way and delivers incredible performances by John Travolta, Zac Efron, and Nikki Blonsky. I would rate this personal favourite of mine 4.5/5 stars and recommend it to those looking for a fun yet serious movie. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public LIbrary

Set in 1960's Baltimore, teen Tracy Turnblad, auditions for "The Corny Collins Show" and makes it on as one of the dancers. Because of her larger size, making it onto a show full of rich, thin, and beautiful white people, she becomes an overnight sensation. This then raises the question of why it is that only certain people can be famous and on TV, and especially why can't black people be on TV alongside white people? This movie combines singing, dancing, performance, humor, and justice into a movie that is not only entertaining but also informative about the events that took place socially in 1960's America.

Hairspray is an incredibly funny, cute, and quirky musical with a very strong and powerful message about equality. Set in the sixties, this film follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, a brave and confident high school girl with big dreams who has a passion for dancing and won’t hesitate to stand up for what is right. This movie has tons of big stars such as Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, John Travolta, and Christopher Walken. The fun, upbeat soundtrack is super catchy and there’s no doubt you’ll find yourself singing along. Not to mention, this wonderful movie was filmed right here in Toronto and Hamilton!

Wow, so many haters. This is my favorite musical movie of all time. I adore most of the songs, especially Without Love, and Tracy, Seaweed, and Penny are so cool. I can watch this over and over again,

The movie didn't include all the songs from the original musical in which is too bad. Wonderful wonderful performances of John Travolta as Edna and seductive sexy performance of Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma Von Tussle. I still think the original Broadway show is better.
