"A broken promise reveals a terrifying legacy in this electrifying novel from the New York Times bestselling author of When All the Girls Have Gone. A painter of fiery, nightmarish visions throws herself into the sea--but she'll leave some of her secretsbehind... Seattle gallery owner Virginia Troy has spent years battling the demons that stem from her childhood time in a cult and the night a fire burned through the compound, killing her mother. And now one of her artists has taken her own life, but not before sending Virginia a last picture: a painting that makes Virginia doubt everything about the so-called suicide--and her own past. Like Virginia, private investigator Cabot Sutter was one of the children in the cult who survived that fire...and only he can help her now. As they struggle to unravel the clues in the painting, it becomes clear that someone thinks Virginia knows more than she does and that she must be stopped. Thrown into an inferno of desire and deception, Virginia and Cabot draw evercloser to the mystery of their shared memories--and the shocking fate of the one man who still wields the power to destroy everything they hold dear"--

I was disappointed with the second instalment in this series. The first book, When All the Girls Have Gone, had a lot of surprises and Max and Charlotte were more normal. These are two broken people who come together in their search for Quinton Zane but don't seem to have much else in common. It does tell the reader that there will be a third instalment with Jack and the pursuit of Zane.

This is the first book that I have read by Jayne Ann Krentz. This was a book that I could not put down. When Virginia Troy gets a picture of a painting, she takes it as a threat and hires a private investigator company to find out what is going on. Cabot Sutter is part of this team, but also knew Virginia when their mothers were part of a cult when they were children. They team up to find out who is killing people, while they try to find the key to the mystery in the painting.

Gallery owner, Virginia Troy, has survived the worst nightmare as a child. She, along with many other children, survived a fire started by a cult leader in the compound they lived. Artist Hannah Brewster was also one of those children. Many thought her crazy but her craziness fueled her ability to paint a Visions series that represented the fire, both past and her visions of what she thought to be the cult leader had returned. When Hannah jumps off a cliff, Virginia is the last to see Hannah's vision. Virginia hires a private investigative service to help investigate Hannah's death. The investigation begins to unravel a chain of events that twist and turn. Just when I thought I had figured out who was responsible, something else threw me off. Loved it! Just enough suspense and romance to balance out to a great read.

I have read every Jayne Ann Krentz novel as I love her writing style, and focus on the Pacific Northwest. However, the repetition of always have a neurotic PTSD heroine featuring the same physical characterics over and over again kinds of leaves me wanting more. I noticed also with this novel that the chapters seem to be extremely brief, leaving a lot of half empty pages.... Still, well written and definately ends with the promise of another sequel.

Really enjoyed this book which had characters that had a past that linked them together, while they were pursuing the present. The author drew you into the lives of the characters and would not let you go until there were answers to quest. There were twists and turns that kept you reading and turning pages so you could get the the end. Great read and looking forward to the next one.

I have every right to make a financial gift to my cousins. This way if your next wife takes you to the cleaners, as everyone seems to think will be the case, you won't have to worry about Xavier and your other kids.
