Adam Bede, an honest, hard-working carpenter, has his heart set on marrying his sweetheart, pretty dairymaid Hetty Sorrel. Hetty wants nothing to do with her boring life on the farm and she allows herself to be seduced by the heir to a local estate. She finds herself abandoned and pregnant from her ill-fated dalliance.

Viewing this from a 21st century lens, you realize Hetty was an ambitious woman who was in the wrong place, wrong time, and made an error out of great pain and fear. Her first suitor, Adam, comes across as a workaholic (though there's a backstory re: his irresponsible drunken father and its effect on him). The other woman, Dinah, fulfills the role of the doe-eyed, patient, ever-helpful and very Christian foil to Hetty. There are some nuances to these stock characters--the caddish seducer, for example, is not entirely caddish--but the director is also inordinately fond of lingering close-ups on his characters staring...and staring, while loud dramatic music plays on...and on.

Two hours is too short to convey the depth of the novel, but the highly talented cast is able to capture their characters with a word or a look. The standout is James Wilby as the young squire, a man who sins not because he is generally a bad person, but because fate conspires to give him the opportunity, and as always, he trusts in his luck to evade the consequences.

I was delighted with this BBC/WGBH adaptation of the poignant George Eliot novel. An overlooked nugget of decent quality. Patsy Kensit (Hetty) and Susannah Harker (Dinah) were captivatingly beautiful.

(Hetty puts a flower given to her by Adam in her hair) Adam Bede: "...Seems to me as a woman's face doesn't want flowers. It's almost like a flower itself. I'm sure yours is."
