(In a "serial killer" nutshell) - Not only do I view this hideous, sadistic-minded, Australian production as being the ultimate "feel bad" movie of all-time.

But, its horrible characters (one and all) made American white-trash look like absolute princes and princesses by comparison.

If you are like me, you are certain to loathe this contemptuous movie for all of its utter worthlessness.

First off - I have to say that I would never, ever trust the movie recommendations and/or opinions of anyone who would willingly give this piece of cinematic slop more than a 1-star rating.

'Cause for anyone to rate it higher would mean that they were actually entertained by this vile, despicable picture. And, (IMO) this certified piece of excrement had no entertainment value, whatsoever.

Anyway - Filled-to-overflowing with lifeless acting, dead dialogue, and "go-nowhere" scenes - "The Snowtown Murders" was, without question, pure dysfunction overload from start to finish.

Apart from a millisecond of good acting by some newcomer found at a shopping mall, Snowtown is a boring Australian film about rednecks killing each other in crappy houses in garbage strewn suburbs.

As a film it proves that the untalented can grind out a film, too. But, unfortunately, it just ends up being an unbearable misery to watch. And - To what end? Redneck Realism.... apparently.

With a script full of annoyingly profane dialog and shot in low-scale color, Snowtown depicts the uneducated killing their neighbors and then going for a drive in the car as sports play on the radio or TV. So what? Yes exactly.

A terrible waste of resources and a tedious waste of your time, Snowtown is for illiterate film makers who think filming atrocities and having unknowns recite swearing is some major step forward in their career.

Directed by Justin Kurzel in 2011 based on the true story of the Snowtown murders, this Australian docudrama delves into the serial murder case.
I don't really care if it's rooted in truth or not, but the film appears profoundly disturbing, gruesome and often unwatchably violent.
The Snowtown murders or the bodies-in-barrels murders were actually 12 murders committed by John Bunting, Robert Wagner and James Vlassakis between August 1992 and May 1999, in South Australia.
However, the film seems to end suddenly out of the blue and leaves me unsatisfied at all while it makes me wonder how about the rest of the case.

Hovering somewhere between documentary realism and disjointed nightmare, Justin Kurzel’s recounting of serial killer John Bunting’s exploits in South Australia during the 1990s is one of the more horrifying works of cinema you’re likely to see. Episodic and deliberately weaving as if to keep audiences off balance, Kurzel applies the screws one appalling twist at a time while his backdrops of suburban squalor and white trash extras keep the storyline grounded and believable. Ending on a terrifying note, the film’s final fifteen minutes are almost unbearable to watch not for what is shown but rather for what is merely implied. This is the stuff of bad dreams made palpably real.

This is a disturbing film but very well acted. The Australian accent is quite thick so I had a hard time understanding a fair amount of the dialogue. I watched it a second time and caught much more of it so be aware of that. It's based on a true story and alike all mass murderers, difficult to comprehend the mindset of such an individual.
The film deserved the prestigious awards, but its not for everyone's viewing pleasure.

Australian films, especially crime dramas, have the reputation of being blunt and bleak, but The Snowtown Murders potentially out-bleaks them all. At the same, this is not a showy film. The film makers know this world and shows it the way it was. One exception is young James Vlassakis, through whose court testimony the story is told. It's possible to doubt he was so teary and reluctant, given that two of his close relatives were victims, on separate occasions, and he drove one of the victims to his death, without the older killers nearby. Though for the most part not explicit, Snowtown is extremely intense -- for mature adults only.

Harsh and atmospheric, this is definitely difficult to watch as the tension builds. The actors make it so real--you become absolutely sold of their authenticity. Excellent work. I just cannot give five stars as it is such a terribly bleak film...certainly not for "date night" (unless you need to break up!).

If you had been in Australia when this came to trial, this movie doesn't even touch on the horror of the crimes. Documents of testimony were hidden from the public for years, speculation ran rampant, and when the truth came out it was much worse than anyone imagined.

This gives you an idea of what went on, but because it is a true story, it couldn't be told in a film like this. Do your own research if you really want it all, but you'll be sorry you ever delved deeper. The details of repeated child rape, ongoing molestation that lasted years, and the brutal torture and killing of those that perpetrated these crimes on children, it's all horrific.

You begin to think of the men that went to jail for the murders as heroes because the police did nothing, but you can't. One horror stacked on top of another never makes anything right.

Hard to understand the Aussie accents
