Very disappointed in the profanity. Not necessary at all. I'm done with Connelly.

Enjoyable! Great new characters! Kept my interest and is full of suspense. Michael Connelly is one of my favorite authors. Looking forward to the next book!

Terrific new character. A real page turner. Can't wait for the next one in what is sure to be a long running character.

Connelly introduces a new character, Detective Renee Ballard. There are Bosch traits in this new one that I enjoy, but some new traits that I also like. Still in all, we have another detective sort of on the outs with leadership, very focused on getting the job done and finding the bad guys, willing to stretch the 'rules' and work outside the box to get it done - more so than Bosch in some ways, and yes, quirky with a muddy past/childhood that plays into decisions from time to time. For a few chapters, I wondered if Connelly was going to pull of the transition of a male writer with a female lead character. I give him B+ on that score - but its a very credible effort for a first try with a new character. The story line(s) was excellent with multiple cases running simultaneously - one big one at the center of things though, that Ballard isn't even supposed to be working on (fun!). One thing about the way the story unfolded though was how Connelly walks the reader through the thinking processes Ballard uses to uncover clues, pondered optional theories and then sorted the out with some fits and starts - I liked that a lot. It wasn't overdone with pages of Ballard running around in her own head, but concise and clear analysis of what leads to what and why and how things fit together. Great ending. Loved the book and highly recommend it. Enjoy.

I found this read to be very disappointing and plodding. It doesn't pick up until the end. The new character Ballard is coarse and dependent.

I loved reading the latest from Connelly with the new character of Renée Ballard. There are a lot of similarities between Ballard's and Harry Bosch's characters, and I hope that future books take the opportunity to distinguish Ballard and make her into as well-rounded a character as Bosch. I enjoyed the complex plot, and thought following 3 cases gave it a feel for the complexity of keeping many pans on the fire that being a police officer in a big city requires. It also kept the tension and pace on high, making it a very enjoyable read.

This book does not disappoint the reader. I like this new character and look forward to future books.

Love Michael Connelly as a writer, but I did not think that this new book is as good as previous novels. Perhaps the new character will become as memorable as Bosch as Mr. Connelly develops her as a person in future novels. I certainly hope so.

A little slow at the start but picks up in the middle. I think this could be a fun series to follow.

Loved the new female detective. The writing is as good as the Bosch series and I hope he follows this book with more of the new female detective. Five stars!!!!
