Though crime is nothing new in Yorkshire, Catherine finds her world turned upside down when the man she blames for her daughter's death, Tommy Lee Royce, is released from prison. Meanwhile, a desperate father arranges a kidnapping with a local drug lord to receive his wealthy boss' ransom money. The plan spirals out of control, however, when Tommy becomes involved with the deal and takes things too far.

I found this so disappointing -- and I was a long-time fan of Sarah Lancashire. The lead is an angry, bitter woman whose emotional range is about one-inch wide. There's very little character development (though we do see some in her sister and grandson, surprisingly).

Challenging, too, is the limited roles for actors of East Asian/Indian heritage -- everybody else is white, which is particularly odd as the north of England is much more racially and ethnically diverse than you'd ever know from watching this. No Black Brits, whatsoever. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising, given that Sally Wainwright seems able to only write flat and insignificant roles for people of color; that's true here as it is in "Last Tango in Halifax." At least that series had more character development.

I was blown away by the character development and acting in this TV drama series! I do agree with another comment about some difficulty with the strong British accent, especially the young boy, but it's good for us, right?! I love the main character and all her flaws, her strength and her persistence. She's driven to the core. Extremely binge-worthy! Season 2 adds even more to the character background and incredible performances. The priest from Grantchester, holy cow! I'm hoping for a season 3.

Super suspenseful TV drama with loads of character development & lots of tension. The first episode was a bit slow, but the remaining 5 episodes had me very stressed out and sitting on the edge of my seat! I agree with some other reviewers about the difficulty understanding the accents; subtitles would have been useful at times :)
What a great ending! Can't wait to see Season 2...

Apparently, I am not alone in often having difficulty following British programming dialogue due to strong regional British accents. I resolved that problem when tape/watching Happy Valley on TV by turning on (English) closed captioning. That way I am able to rewind and catch the dialogue I missed. The same applies for DVD's. It greatly enhances my enjoyment of these excellent programs.

Often hard to comprehend the speech, but a fascinating story line. If you're a fan of the PBS series "Grantchester" you might find it as interesting as I did to see what a fine actor the lead is. In Grantchester he is lovely, loving, lovable. In this series he is the polar opposite of those adjectives: he's someone who is violent for the sake of violence, cruel for cruelty's sake, unloved by all, and completely believable in the part. He took my breath away in his fearsomeness. The parts of the women are so well done it seems they were born to play the parts.

I didn't enjoy this thriller as much I expected it, because of the difficulty to understand the British accent.

Created and written by Sally Wainwright, who also gave us Scott and Bailey. Both are brilliantly acted and filmed. I want more!

Smart, snappy British series. Believable, realistic, often-sad, often-tragic characters (as opposed to the thin, beautiful/handsome actors in the majority of American series) in sad, gritty circumstances (nothing romanticized here: it's a tough world out there). Great suspense; begs to be binge-watched. 5 out of 5 stars.
