This is one of the better 'Bosch' novels. Fast paced with flashbacks to Vietnam that provided relevance to the current era of the crime (before mobile phones). Enjoyable read.

First in the series but way too much background/filler material which does distract from the story. Later stories in the Bosch series flow much better so I would guess a new editor was inserted to help a good writer hit his stride. The series is actually important because of the very checkered history of the LAPD. The author gives us a good look at an enforcement system teetering on the brink of anarchy-like the NYPD these are cops with a lot of issues and very suspect leadership and control.

Excellent debut

Good debut of an interesting character. Plot is a little overdone but the idea of the crime is creative. Looking forward to working my way through other Harry Bosch novels.

Harry Bosch's origin story - - superlative writing style, all the right details to make for a fascinating, out-of-the ordinary cop mystery/action novel. Connelly's writing comes across as so very authentic, one cannot find a better word then // authentic \\!
The paranoid, mindless and lizard-like actions of a bureaucracy ring so very true.

Great story. If the rest of the detective Bosch stories are as good as this one, I have a lot of great reading ahead.

This was not my favorite Harry Bosch book. Connelly could have left out the exceedingly long description of going through the underground sewer lines of both LA and Vietnam. The plot was actually very thin and was held together by lots of unnecessary details. Usually I like Connelly's books but this was his first so he can be cut a little slack.

This author was recommended to me; specifically the Harry Bosch novels. Well, I enjoyed it well enough, however, I found there to be a lot of filler - sometimes pages and pages worth. I liked the book well enough to try the 2nd book in the series sometime in the near future. A very quick read.

I'm always excited to find a series I haven't yet read.
This is smart , well written and fast paced, just the way I like them.
Interesting and complex characters hold your interest . Great story line. Although this book is 20 years old, it stills feels relatively current even though no one uses cell phones and some of the other modern conveniences we now take for granted.
A great read!
