On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared--Lt. Louis Zamperini. Captured by the Japanese and driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor.

This is well written and inspiring in its way but it is heavy - This is a true story and the main character when through very difficult experiences, even torture. Not to be read unless you are in a good mindset.

I listened...then relistened, and am now listening again.

The first time through, I listened during runs and hikes, then progressed to listening to it here, there, everywhere just so I could hear more. It is so well done, and so worth reading. If you are expecting a dry, dull narrative in age tinted black and white, you could not be more wrong. If the idea of sitting down to read non-fiction leaves you cold, opt for the audiobook narrated by the late Edward Herrmann. He was wonderful to listen to.

This is one of the most powerful stories I have ever read. Mr. Zamperini was a world class Olympic athlete that spent his prime surviving unbelievable brutality as a prisoner of war in Japan. Colin Kaepernick should read this book.

A must read for students of history and a must listen-to for those fans of audiobooks, this story will inspire and entertain.

What an incredible story of inner strength allowing Louis Zamperini to persevere through trial after trial with seemingly impossible odds. Laura Hillenbrand does her usual thorough research and tells the story so the reader understands the gravity of the numerous statistics quoted. Equally engaging is the narrator who tells the story.

Excellent writer, amazing man & the fantastic reader Edward Herrmann. Sadly, Louis died as the movie was being completed and doubly sad & will be greatly missed is Herrmann, who died at the close of 2014. What a lose to the reader community.

The Ultimate survival story. A bit long winded at times but quite fascinating.
