Feb 20, 2014 Disappointed that it did not go deeper into the role of a white house butler, though appreciated the significant civil rights movements and the presidential views on racial issues from Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy,Johnson,…

Shallow, and no closed captioning, so I missed most of the dialogue. But thank God, Black filmmaking is coming into its day, and Blacks are represented on tv. I won't like everything, but I'm grateful for more Black films. I learned from…

An excellent summary of the history of White racism from share cropping to the election of Barack O'bama. Reagan is the only president whose racism is openly portrayed as he supported South African apartheid and we were left wondering how…

Although the acting is mediocre, the arc of this movie covering 50 years of black civil and political rights struggle and the attitudes of the presidents (Truman to Reagan) in the White House is captivating. In this era of "Black Lives…

Wow. The times. And here we are still. Real, intense, flawed and heroic human beings. People take many paths to do their best.

What a waste of time and celluloid. There wasn't anyone I liked or rooted for. I don't even want to waste time writing about it. Movie gets zero.

A single word: poignant. As to previous comments: akirakato sums it up very well. On the other hand, Byond has something of a point. It struck me right away that though what happened in the beginning clearly happened on many occasions, it…

Isn't it a Hollywood- produced poor copy of "The Remains of the Day"?

This is a 2013 docu-drama directed by Lee Daniels, loosely based on the real life of Eugene Allen. Forest Whitaker plays as Cecil Gaines, an African-American who is a witness of notable political and social events of the 20th century…

My own reaction was disappointment. If it was intended as propaganda it probably hit the mark. We're hooked early with the rape and murder, but those never happened. A very free approach to history turns this into a charmless Forrest…

Of all the movies on the subject of racial discrimination in recent years, I found this to be the best. The main characters were not simply caricatures but well rounded and believable.

Excellent movie spanning a lifetime. Highly recommend it. Completely engrossed from beginning to end. Forest Whitaker is wonderful in his role. Hard to grasp Oprah in her role, but after I put aside the fact that she was Oprah, she was…

It is an interesting story, but it does not hold together. Some heavy editing might have helped.

There is a lot going on in this film and for this reason, I think it would have fared better as a T.V. miniseries.
